His Majesty King Charles III announced as Royal Patron of Prospect Burma
Buckingham Palace has confirmed that His Majesty The King is to retain his Patronage of Prospect Burma following a review of over 1,000 patronages held by The late Queen, The former Prince of Wales and The former Duchess of Cornwall.
As The former Prince of Wales, His Majesty first became the Prospect Burma's Royal Patron in 2016, due to his long-standing interest in the people and culture of Myanmar, and the value he places on education.
Executive Director's Response
Responding to the news, Prospect Burma's Executive Director, Dr Joanna Barnard said:
"We are absolutely delighted that His Majesty King Charles III has retained his Patronage of Prospect Burma. With the increasing conflict and instability in Myanmar, our work providing its young people with access to education is vital. Many of our 1,500+ alumni, who have benefited from our higher education scholarships over the last 35 years, are now at the forefront of responding to this crisis by helping their communities with health, humanitarian and education support. His Majesty's support is deeply valued by our trustees, staff, volunteers, alumni and beneficiaries."
About His Majesty's Patronage
His Majesty King Charles III has long held a deep interest in the people and culture of Myanmar, and places significant value on education as a cornerstone of development and opportunity. His continued patronage of Prospect Burma demonstrates his ongoing commitment to supporting young people from Myanmar in accessing quality education that will enable them to become the professionals and leaders their country desperately needs.
The retention of this Royal Patronage is particularly meaningful as Myanmar faces unprecedented challenges. Since the 2021 coup, the education system has collapsed, universities remain closed, and millions of young people have been cut off from educational opportunities. Prospect Burma's work has never been more critical.
Our Work Under Royal Patronage
Under His Majesty's patronage, Prospect Burma continues to:
- Award scholarships to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to study at universities worldwide
- Provide Grade 11-12 education through safe, accessible programmes
- Support alumni in their work helping communities affected by conflict and crisis
- Build a network of skilled professionals committed to Myanmar's peaceful future
We are honoured to continue our work under His Majesty's patronage and remain committed to our mission of providing transformative education to young people from Myanmar.
